Orchard 1.3 Released - Forms API, Tokens, Content Item Preview

We're very excited about the release of Orchard 1.3 today. We have already upgraded a client website from Orchard 1.2.41 to Orchard 1.3.9 this morning and everything looks great. Lots of bug fixes and improvements in Orchard 1.3, including: Content Item Preview, Forms API, and Tokens to name a few. Orchard Web Developers will particularly enjoy the ability to delete content types and parts as well as the Task Lease API; rules to trigger custom actions based on particular events; localization of data annotations, widgets, and alternates; etc.

Download Orchard 1.3

Orchard 1.3 is on CodePlex. You can download the Orchard 1.3 source code or just an Orchard 1.3 default website. Orchard 1.3 is not in the WebMatrix Web Gallery yet. We did a quick download of Orchard using the WebMatrix Web Gallery and it was still 1.2.41. We recommend installing Orchard 1.3 from CodePlex for the next couple of days until Orchard 1.3 is available in the WebMatrix Web Gallery.

Orchard 1.3 released!

Upgrading from Orchard 1.2 to Orchard 1.3 is still a manual effort of backing up your data, keeping track of any custom module settings, etc., but if you do it enough times like us it gets pretty easy.

Orchard 1.3 Features

Some pretty nice features made it into Orchard 1.3 that will make both Orchard Web Administrators and Orchard Web Developers equally happy. Features include:

  • Content item preview
  • Markdown support
  • Delete content types and parts
  • Title part enables non-routable types to have a title
  • Common added by default to content types
  • Rules: trigger custom actions triggered by events
  • Forms API: create forms from code
  • Tokens: system-wide variables
  • New content manager methods: part eager loading, get multiple items by ids in one query
  • Task Lease API: creates server affinities for background tasks on web farms and cloud platforms
  • Localization: data annotations, widgets, alternates
  • Lists have RSS feeds

We'll be writing Orchard 1.3 Tutorials and Tips and Tricks based on these new features soon enough. If you are an Orchard Web Developer, you'll especially be pleased by a number of these items that make it easier to develop forms, custom modules, and custom themes.

Conclusion

Head over to CodePlex and download Orchard 1.3. Once we finish upgrading a number of Orchard Websites to 1.3, we'll upgrade our own website and be enjoying a number of these features ourselves!
